Few places on our planet remain untouched or pristine. We live in a post-natural world; one that has been reshaped by human influence. In echoes of a new eden Stockhausen explores this idea through her abstract, hard-edged paintings that combine geometric and organic forms, making her own post-natural landscapes of mountains, plains, hills and waterways. Initially seeming devoid of flora and fauna, upon closer inspection there are traces of natural patterns in this artificial construction.
Stockhausen’s empty landscapes invite us to reconsider our relationship with the environment, urging us to view our planet through a fresh lens. Might these landscapes offer a space for respect, empathy, and diversity—an imagined future that is radically new and filled with possibilities?
Dore Stockhausen (b. 1966, Mainz, Germany) is a mid-career artist with a rich creative practice. Over the last decade she has shifted to painting, working in acrylic paint in a way that (echoes) the enamelling techniques she used during her long jewellery career. She combs, pushes, and scrapes the paint over the canvas and when dry, sandpapers it back to a smooth surface. Washes are then layered over the underpainting, which will emerge as fragments, revealing the entire process of the piece at the end once the composition is complete.
Originally from Germany, Stockhausen migrated to Australia in 1992 and now lives and works in Beechworth, Victoria. Stockhausen has exhibited regularly since the mid-90s, and her work is represented in regional and national collections including the National Gallery of Australia.
